Tierra del Fuego Opens Its Waters: A New Frontier for Sustainable Salmon Aquaculture

The Province of Tierra del Fuego has enacted Provincial Decree 0587/26, regulating Law No. 1601 and establishing a comprehensive legal framework for open-water salmon aquaculture. For the first time, the province offers a clear, structured, and legally certain pathway for investors seeking to develop sustainable salmon farming in one of the world's most pristine environments.

The framework is built around three pillars: prior strategic environmental planning to define suitable zones, streamlined institutional coordination with a single-entry approval process, and time-bound concessions of up to 30 years, covering the full integrated production system from inland hatcheries to coastal processing infrastructure.

Biosecurity and origin as competitive advantage

The province is positioning biosecurity not as a regulatory cost, but as a core differentiator. Mandatory traceability, health validation, and official oversight throughout the production chain underpin a "Tierra del Fuego" origin brand tailored to premium international markets.

A compelling fiscal environment

Under Law No. 19.640, the province's Special Customs Area offers up to 100% relief from national taxes, full exemption on imports, and no export duties, making it one of the most competitive fiscal environments for aquaculture investment in the Southern Hemisphere.
